SignTech’s Guide to Starting a Side Business [Part 3]

What should you do as a side hustle?

So, you found a way to free up some time to focus on your side business, now what? You need an idea of what you want to do as a business. If you already have one in mind then hurray! But it you don’t- don’t be discouraged. Not every idea can be a completely new service like our paperless forms but there are many great ideas on what to do for a startup business for example, teaching English via skype, being a translator for documents if you speak more than one language. The way to do this is finding out what your talents are; What are you instinctively good at? What have you always been interested in for as long as you could remember? The answer to these questions are most likely going to be the answer to what your side business is going to be.

Here are some ideas on what to do for your side business without having to create a new product or service:

  • Graphic Designer/Web Designer:

Are you artistically inclined and do you know how to use any graphic design software such as Photoshop, illustrator, Corel draw or even paint really well. Graphic designers are always needed for certain jobs and these days learning how to use software like Photoshop is just a click away, as there are hundreds and thousands of online resources which teach you the ins and outs of the software. You do not need to be the most creative person in the world to be a good graphic designer.

Web design doesn’t require as much artistry depending on what you’re going for, but it is a bit more complex. Learning to web design is simple yet no easy feat. You must be able to put in the time and effort to do this as a side hustle. Start with upwork or freelance uk There are many jobs for graphic designers available

  • Online coach/Course instructor:

Have something you’re good at? Maybe baking, Photoshop, excel, or even making origami, chances are someone out there is trying to learn exactly that. Teaching your skills online is a good way to make money without having to sacrifice a lot of time. Start with upwork. There are many freelance opportunities available

  • Translator:

If you speak, read and write more than one language, there is a huge market out there for you. Documents, audio books, proof reading and many more freelancing gigs that pay well. On upwork. There are many freelance jobs for translators available

  • Remote English tutor:

Teaching English has become a great way to make money for native speakers. Many people travel to foreign countries and teach English to the locals, but what if you can’t travel? No worries. You can teach English via skype or any other video platform. Perfect for a side hustle that requires minimal compromise of your time

  • Airbnb host:

Do you have a spare bedroom at home that hardly gets used? Why not turn it into a lovely Airbnb for hosting people from all over the world. It’s a great way to meet new people and also have a semi-passive stream of income. I say semi because you would be on call for anything the host might need while they stay at your Airbnb.

  • Drive for Uber/Lyft:

Lyft or Uber is a good way to make money but be sure to do your research first as you will be covering the cost of gas, and any other transport fees that could occur.

  • Rent your car on Turo:

Assuming you only have one car and you need extra cash. Renting out your car on Turo is a perfect way to make money. You can rent it out on days or weeks you won’t particularly need it and it requires little effort on your part.

You’re protected with $1 million in liability insurance, and your car is covered against theft and physical damage, unless you have commercial rental insurance and choose to waive protection provided via Turo for yourself and your customers. They even have an earning’s estimator so you can see how much you could make every year with your car.

  • Freelance writing/Ghost writing:

Ghost writing is a lucrative way of making money on the side. Many sites like up work have people looking for ghost writers for all sorts of things. From essays to novels to articles. Just find which one you’re interested in and start writing! Start with upwork. There are many freelance opportunities available

The side business is not to make your life easy, but rather to make your life easier financially which is why I advise doing something that you really love as a side business because it is easier when you like what you do- notice I didn’t say easy? Juggling jobs is never “easy” but you can prevent it from feeling overwhelming by planning your time properly and making the most of your weekends. You don’t have to remain stuck in your job if you feel unfulfilled and you don’t have to quit your job to find some sort of freedom. You can start a small business that supplements your income without having to take up all your free time.
